A review of electroplating for V–VI thermoelectric films: from synthesis to device integration

Starting with the first published works on the electrochemical deposition of thermoelectric (TE) V–VI compounds in the early nineties, these past two decades have seen a steady increase in scientific interest and publications on this topic. This is hardly surprising, as TE devices offer unique opportunities for power generation in virtually any environment (“energy harvesting”) or demanding cooling applications through the Peltier effect. This review first provides an overview of the advances in the electrodeposition of n- and p-type thin films based on Bi2(Te, Se)3 and (Bi, Sb)2Te3, the currently best-known TE materials for room temperature applications. The overview includes information about the electrolyte and the deposition conditions as well as the achieved composition, thickness, morphology, and TE properties of the deposited films. Additionally, we present the state-of-the-art and recent developments in electroplating-based fabrication processes for microscale TE devices.

Determining electron temperature and electron density in moderate pressure H2/CH4 microwave plasma

The electron temperature and electron density are measured in a microwave (MW) plasma-assisted chemical vapour diamond deposition reactor for different experimental conditions by varying the substrate temperature, methane content and MW power density. Optical emission spectroscopy (OES) and MW interferometry are used to probe the discharge generated in a stainless steel resonant cavity excited at a frequency of 2.45 GHz. Changing the substrate temperature from 630 to 900 ?C does not show any significant influence on the electron temperature or on the electron density. Increasing the methane content from 0 to 10% does not lead to any modification of the electron temperature or density. However between 10% and 20% CH, a decrease of the electron density is observed which may be attributed to soot particle formation. The electron density increases in the range of (1.2-10) x 1011 cm-3 from moderate power density conditions (50 hPa/1000 W) to high power density conditions (250 hPa/3500 W). OES measurements show that the electron temperature exhibits a flat axial profile in the plasma bulk and ranges from 14 000K at (25 hPa/600 W) to 10 500K at (400 hPa/3000 W).

Initial stages of AZ91 Mg alloy micro-arc anodizing : Growth mechanisms and effect on the corrosion resistance

In the framework of the new ecological regulations, micro-arc oxidation (MAO) appears as an alternativeto usual processes in the field of corrosion protection of Mg alloys. In this work, the initial stagesof anodic layer growth in KOH-based electrolytes are studied up to and beyond the initiation of themicro-arc regime.The properties of the first anodized film preceding the occurrence of the dielectric breakdown (corre-sponding to the start of the micro-arc regime) are mainly determined by the incorporation of additives(fluorides or silicates) in the film, as shown by in situ electrochemical measurements. Scanning electronmicroscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and micro-Raman spectroscopy reveal boththe change of morphology and chemical state of silicate and fluoride in the anodized layer before andafter the micro-arc regime. In terms of electrochemical behaviour, investigated by stationary methodsand electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in reference corrosive water, the anodic film grownin the silicate medium provides the best corrosion resistance thanks to a thick layer containing Mg2SiO4,whose degradation products seal the porosities of the coating.

The kinetic aspects of the coating formation on the 2024 aluminium alloy at different time intervals of the microarc oxidation process(MAO) in an alkaline-silicate electrolyte under the AC current are investigated.Moreover themain reasons of modifications in theMAO coating properties (corrosion resistance,microhardness) and phase composition during the process are shown. Finally, non-destructive controlmethods ofMAO coating properties are worked out.

A detailed analysis of the evolution of industrial Dual Phase (DP) steel microstructures is carried out as a function of various annealing and tempering conditions. Advanced characterization techniques such as Parallel Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (PEELS) in the TEM and high spatial resolution Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (NanoSIMS) are employed in order to provide qualitative and quantitative measurements of local carbon concentration in the martensite. For certain annealing and tempering conditions, it is observed that local variations in carbon levels have occurred inside the individual martensite islands. These carbon variations strongly influence the damage behaviour of the steel. During tensile tests, a clear dependence of the damage mode on the local martensite carbon content is observed. Better knowledge of the relationship between the microstructure evolution at the sub-grain level and the damage behaviour can facilitate the design of DP steels with improved damage resistance.

Superaustenitic stainless steels exhibit excellent corrosion resistance, at a wide variety of exposure temperatures, especially in chloride containing environments, coupled with desirable mechanical properties. Previous studies have shown that these steels are prone to precipitation of secondary phases, such as sigma phase (sigma), chi phase (chi). Laves-phase, carbides, nitrides or secondary austenite, when exposed at elevated temperatures, directly affecting their mechanical properties and corrosion behaviour. A detailed study of the effect of isothermal ageing on the microstructure of S32654 (Fe-24Cr-21Ni-7Mo-0.5N-0.013C) and S31254 (Fe-20Cr-18Ni-6Mo-0.2N-0.012C) superaustenitic stainless steels was carried out. Samples were aged within the temperature range of 650 degrees C to 950 degrees C for times up to 3000 h. Following ageing, precipitation of secondary phases was clearly observed with precipitates varying in volume fraction, size, shape and spatial distribution. Several secondary phases were identified via transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron diffraction (ED). The orientation relationships between the austenitic matrix and the secondary phases were identified. Interaction and also phase transformation among different types of precipitates, such as between precipitates and the austenitic matrix were observed and an attempt of understanding these phase transformations was carried out.

Nowadays more and more hot stamped steel sheets dedicated for the automotive body-in-white structure are pre-coated to prevent the steel surface against iron oxidation and decarburization during the austenitization step. For these applications, the coating is deposited by continuous hot-dipping the steel in an Al-Si bath. The Al-Si coating, at the delivery state, contains Al-grains, Al-Fe-Si ternary phases, Al-Fe binary phases. During the austenitization, the Al-Si coating transforms completely by inter-diffusion and solidification reactions. The mechanisms of Al-Fe-Si phase transformations at high temperature are almost unknown. The phase transformations occurring during austenitization define the final coating microstructure responsible for the in use properties of the product like spot welding, painting adherence or corrosion behavior. It is the aim of this paper to propose a new way of understanding the mechanisms of phase transformation in the Al-Si coating during the austenitization step (between 900 and 930 degrees C) before the transfer into the hot-stamping press.

Synchrotron x-ray radiation was used for in situ strain measurements in gold films on polyimide substrate during uniaxial deformation tests. We have used an area detector that allows inspecting multiple directions in the polycrystalline thin film without serial sectioning during straining. We show in this paper the configuration used and the attainable orientations on a pole figure for which the x-ray strains are measured. Moreover, we show the effect on the x-ray strains of the onset on plasticity, which was not detected by optical (macroscopic) strain measurement. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In situ transmission electron microscopy investigations were carried out on a supersaturated nitrogen ferrite to characterise the precipitation kinetics of alpha `'-Fe16N2 nitrides at 85 degrees C. The coarsening behaviour consists of two stages. The first stage obeys the LSW theory and the coarsening rate was determined as 11.2 nm(3) s(-1). The second stage corresponds to the stabilization of coarsening, and was assumed to be related to the coherency loss between the precipitates and the matrix. (c) 2010 Acta Materialia Inc. A multiphase model for Ti-6Al-4V is proposed. This material is widely used in industrial applications and so needs accurate behaviour modeling. Tests have been performed in the temperature range from 25 degrees C to 1020 degrees C and at strain rates between 10(-3) s(-1) and 1 s(-1). This allowed the identification of a multiphase mechanical model coupled with a metallurgical model. The behaviour of each phase is calibrated by solving an inverse problem including a phase transformation model and a mechanical model to simulate tests under thermomechanical loadings. A scale transition rule (beta-rule) is proposed in order to represent the redistribution of local stresses linked to the heterogeneity of plastic strain. Finally this model is applied to two laser assisted processes: direct laser fabrication and laser welding. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this study, hypoeutectoid Fe-N binary specimens have been prepared by gas nitriding pure iron in austenite domain at 840 A degrees C. The slow cooling of these specimens led to the alpha-ferrite + gamma'-Fe(4)N pearlitic microstructure which is similar to the pearlite in Fe-C binary system. This pearlitic microstructure has been characterized by electron microscopy. The crystal structure of the gamma'-Fe(4)N nitride has been identified by electron microdiffraction and the Nishiyama-Wassermann (N-W) and near Kurdjumov-Sachs (K-S) orientation relationships have been found between the alpha-ferrite and the gamma'-Fe(4)N.

By combining the large-angle convergent-beam electron diffraction (LACBED) configuration together with a microscope equipped with a C., corrector it is possible to obtain good quality spot patterns in image mode and not in diffraction mode as it is usually the case. These patterns have two main advantages with respect to the conventional selected-area electron diffraction (SAED) or microdiffraction patterns. They display a much larger number of reflections and the diffracted intensity is the integrated intensity. These patterns have strong similarities with the electron precession patterns and they can be used for various applications like the identification of the possible space groups of a crystal from observations of the Lane zones or the ab-initio structure identifications. Since this is a defocused method, another important application concerns the analysis of electron beam-sensitive materials. Successful applications to polymers are given in the present paper to prove the validity of this method with regards to these materials. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In a previous study, it was reported that the possible space groups of a crystal can be identified at a microscopic or nanoscopic scale, thanks to microdiffraction patterns obtained with a nearly parallel electron incident beam focused on a very small area of the specimen. A systematic method was proposed, which consists of the observation of a few microdiffraction patterns displaying at least two Laue zones. These microdiffraction patterns can also be obtained by using an electron precession equipment. In this case, the patterns display a very large number of reflections in the Laue zones whose intensity is the integrated intensity. These original features greatly facilitate the space group identification method and are particularly useful when the high-order Laue zones (HOLZ) are not visible on microdiffraction patterns or when very thin specimens are not available. The possible space groups of a crystal can be identified from a few zone axis microdiffraction patterns provided the position (and not the intensity) of the reflections on the patterns is taken into account. The method is based on the observation of the shifts and the periodicity differences between the reflections located in the first-order Lane zone (FOLZ) with respect to the ones located in the zero-order Laue zone (ZOLZ). Electron precession microdiffraction patterns display more reflections in the ZOLZ and in the FOLZ than in the conventional microdiffraction patterns and this number increases with the precession angle. It is shown, from the TiAl example given in the present study. that this interesting feature brings a strong beneficial effect for the identification of the possible space groups since it becomes very easy to identify unambiguously the FOLZ/ZOLZ shifts and periodicity differences. In addition. the diffracted intensity on the precession patterns is the integrated intensitv and this intensity can also be used to identify the Laue class.

A physically based process model for the room temperature yield strength of an age-hardenable alloy subject to selected monotonic non-isothermal heat treatment schedules is developed and used to examine the possible efficiencies in processing and enhancements in strength that may be realistically achieved. `Processing Maps' are generated which illustrate both the yield strengths achievable and the processing routes necessary to achieve them, as well as estimates of the energy consumed in the thermal treatment. A Fe-2Cu (wt.%) alloy is used as an example and the results of physical experiments are compared with the model predictions. For the conditions examined, enhancements in yield strength of similar to 8% above those achievable in comparable isothermal treatments are illustrated with 65% of the energy input. Alternatively, similar yield strengths to those from comparable isothermal treatment are shown to be achievable with similar to 35% of the energy input. The physical origins of the observed effects and the potential implications of coupled process-property optimization are considered. (c) 2006 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd.
