This is hardly surprising, as TE devices offer unique opportunities for power generation in virtually any environment (“energy harvesting”) or demanding cooling applications through the Peltier effect. This review first provides an overview of the advances in the electrodeposition of n- and p-type thin films based on Bi2(Te, Se)3 and (Bi, Sb)2Te3, the currently best-known TE materials for room temperature applications. The overview includes information about the electrolyte and the deposition conditions as well as the achieved composition, thickness, morphology, and TE properties of the deposited films. Additionally, we present the state-of-the-art and recent developments in electroplating-based fabrication processes for microscale TE devices. Optical emission spectroscopy (OES) and MW interferometry are used to probe the discharge generated in a stainless steel resonant cavity excited at a frequency of 2.45 GHz. Changing the substrate temperature from 630 to 900 ?C does not show any significant influence on the electron temperature or on the electron density. Increasing the methane content from 0 to 10% does not lead to any modification of the electron temperature or density. However between 10% and 20% CH, a decrease of the electron density is observed which may be attributed to soot particle formation. The electron density increases in the range of (1.2-10) x 1011 cm-3 from moderate power density conditions (50 hPa/1000 W) to high power density conditions (250 hPa/3500 W). OES measurements show that the electron temperature exhibits a flat axial profile in the plasma bulk and ranges from 14 000K at (25 hPa/600 W) to 10 500K at (400 hPa/3000 W). In this work, the initial stagesof anodic layer growth in KOH-based electrolytes are studied up to and beyond the initiation of themicro-arc regime.The properties of the first anodized film preceding the occurrence of the dielectric breakdown (corre-sponding to the start of the micro-arc regime) are mainly determined by the incorporation of additives(fluorides or silicates) in the film, as shown by in situ electrochemical measurements. Scanning electronmicroscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and micro-Raman spectroscopy reveal boththe change of morphology and chemical state of silicate and fluoride in the anodized layer before andafter the micro-arc regime. In terms of electrochemical behaviour, investigated by stationary methodsand electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in reference corrosive water, the anodic film grownin the silicate medium provides the best corrosion resistance thanks to a thick layer containing Mg2SiO4,whose degradation products seal the porosities of the coating. Advanced characterization techniques such as Parallel Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (PEELS) in the TEM and high spatial resolution Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (NanoSIMS) are employed in order to provide qualitative and quantitative measurements of local carbon concentration in the martensite. For certain annealing and tempering conditions, it is observed that local variations in carbon levels have occurred inside the individual martensite islands. These carbon variations strongly influence the damage behaviour of the steel. During tensile tests, a clear dependence of the damage mode on the local martensite carbon content is observed. Better knowledge of the relationship between the microstructure evolution at the sub-grain level and the damage behaviour can facilitate the design of DP steels with improved damage resistance. Previous studies have shown that these steels are prone to precipitation of secondary phases, such as sigma phase (sigma), chi phase (chi). Laves-phase, carbides, nitrides or secondary austenite, when exposed at elevated temperatures, directly affecting their mechanical properties and corrosion behaviour. A detailed study of the effect of isothermal ageing on the microstructure of S32654 (Fe-24Cr-21Ni-7Mo-0.5N-0.013C) and S31254 (Fe-20Cr-18Ni-6Mo-0.2N-0.012C) superaustenitic stainless steels was carried out. Samples were aged within the temperature range of 650 degrees C to 950 degrees C for times up to 3000 h. Following ageing, precipitation of secondary phases was clearly observed with precipitates varying in volume fraction, size, shape and spatial distribution. Several secondary phases were identified via transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron diffraction (ED). The orientation relationships between the austenitic matrix and the secondary phases were identified. Interaction and also phase transformation among different types of precipitates, such as between precipitates and the austenitic matrix were observed and an attempt of understanding these phase transformations was carried out. For these applications, the coating is deposited by continuous hot-dipping the steel in an Al-Si bath. The Al-Si coating, at the delivery state, contains Al-grains, Al-Fe-Si ternary phases, Al-Fe binary phases. During the austenitization, the Al-Si coating transforms completely by inter-diffusion and solidification reactions. The mechanisms of Al-Fe-Si phase transformations at high temperature are almost unknown. The phase transformations occurring during austenitization define the final coating microstructure responsible for the in use properties of the product like spot welding, painting adherence or corrosion behavior. It is the aim of this paper to propose a new way of understanding the mechanisms of phase transformation in the Al-Si coating during the austenitization step (between 900 and 930 degrees C) before the transfer into the hot-stamping press. We have used an area detector that allows inspecting multiple directions in the polycrystalline thin film without serial sectioning during straining. We show in this paper the configuration used and the attainable orientations on a pole figure for which the x-ray strains are measured. This material is widely used in industrial applications and so needs accurate behaviour modeling. Tests have been performed in the temperature range from 25 degrees C to 1020 degrees C and at strain rates between 10(-3) s(-1) and 1 s(-1). This allowed the identification of a multiphase mechanical model coupled with a metallurgical model. The behaviour of each phase is calibrated by solving an inverse problem including a phase transformation model and a mechanical model to simulate tests under thermomechanical loadings. A scale transition rule (beta-rule) is proposed in order to represent the redistribution of local stresses linked to the heterogeneity of plastic strain. The slow cooling of these specimens led to the alpha-ferrite + gamma'-Fe(4)N pearlitic microstructure which is similar to the pearlite in Fe-C binary system. This pearlitic microstructure has been characterized by electron microscopy. The crystal structure of the gamma'-Fe(4)N nitride has been identified by electron microdiffraction and the Nishiyama-Wassermann (N-W) and near Kurdjumov-Sachs (K-S) orientation relationships have been found between the alpha-ferrite and the gamma'-Fe(4)N. These patterns have two main advantages with respect to the conventional selected-area electron diffraction (SAED) or microdiffraction patterns. They display a much larger number of reflections and the diffracted intensity is the integrated intensity. These patterns have strong similarities with the electron precession patterns and they can be used for various applications like the identification of the possible space groups of a crystal from observations of the Lane zones or the ab-initio structure identifications. Since this is a defocused method, another important application concerns the analysis of electron beam-sensitive materials. Ultramicroscopy 2007 107 6-7 514-522 In a previous study, it was reported that the possible space groups of a crystal can be identified at a microscopic or nanoscopic scale, thanks to microdiffraction patterns obtained with a nearly parallel electron incident beam focused on a very small area of the specimen. A systematic method was proposed, which consists of the observation of a few microdiffraction patterns displaying at least two Laue zones. These microdiffraction patterns can also be obtained by using an electron precession equipment. In this case, the patterns display a very large number of reflections in the Laue zones whose intensity is the integrated intensity. These original features greatly facilitate the space group identification method and are particularly useful when the high-order Laue zones (HOLZ) are not visible on microdiffraction patterns or when very thin specimens are not available. Journal of microscopy 2007 227 2 157-171 The possible space groups of a crystal can be identified from a few zone axis microdiffraction patterns provided the position (and not the intensity) of the reflections on the patterns is taken into account. The method is based on the observation of the shifts and the periodicity differences between the reflections located in the first-order Lane zone (FOLZ) with respect to the ones located in the zero-order Laue zone (ZOLZ). Electron precession microdiffraction patterns display more reflections in the ZOLZ and in the FOLZ than in the conventional microdiffraction patterns and this number increases with the precession angle. It is shown, from the TiAl example given in the present study. that this interesting feature brings a strong beneficial effect for the identification of the possible space groups since it becomes very easy to identify unambiguously the FOLZ/ZOLZ shifts and periodicity differences. A Fe-2Cu (wt.%) alloy is used as an example and the results of physical experiments are compared with the model predictions. For the conditions examined, enhancements in yield strength of similar to 8% above those achievable in comparable isothermal treatments are illustrated with 65% of the energy input. Alternatively, similar yield strengths to those from comparable isothermal treatment are shown to be achievable with similar to 35% of the energy input.
