SAED and XRD analyses confirm the formation of Te 1D nanostructures with a hexagonal single crystalline structure following the [001] direction. A systematic study of the influence of synthesis parameters on the deposits morphology has shown that it is possible to control the shape and the dimensions of the deposited nanostructures. Specifically, the applied potential has a strong influence on the morphology of the deposits. Nanowires or hollow nanostructures can be obtained, depending on mass transport conditions, as confirmed by the use of a soluble anode. This is hardly surprising, as TE devices offer unique opportunities for power generation in virtually any environment (“energy harvesting”) or demanding cooling applications through the Peltier effect. This review first provides an overview of the advances in the electrodeposition of n- and p-type thin films based on Bi2(Te, Se)3 and (Bi, Sb)2Te3, the currently best-known TE materials for room temperature applications. The overview includes information about the electrolyte and the deposition conditions as well as the achieved composition, thickness, morphology, and TE properties of the deposited films. Additionally, we present the state-of-the-art and recent developments in electroplating-based fabrication processes for microscale TE devices. Crops Prod. 2015 70 332-340 Six porous carbon materials, produced by hydrothermal treatment of flavonoid tannin and subsequent carbonization at 1173 K, were tested as electrodes of supercapacitors. Four of these carbons were doped with nitrogen by putting tannin in contact with ammonia before or during the hydrothermal treatment. The pyrolyzed hydrothermal carbons had moderate surface areas, within the range 442-684 m2 g-1, and nitrogen contents ranging from 0.7 to 8.0 wt.%. Specific capacitances as high as 320 F g-1 and normalized capacitances as high as 58 ?F cm-2 were measured at 2 mV s-1. These performances are comparable with those obtained with high surface area-activated carbons, whereas, normalized capacitances values are among the highest ever reported. Mesostructuration, within the range 3-13 nm, of these materials appears to be a good strategy to improve their electrochem. performances at higher scan rates. We confirmed the beneficial role of oxygen up to 18 wt.%, while an optimum in nitrogen content exists from 3 to 6 wt.%. [on SciFinder(R)] Département CP2S : Chimie et électrochimie des matériaux F. Numerical methods were applied on both electrochemical and optical data to obtain the relevant kinetic parameters from electrocrystallization theoretical equations and ellipsometric models in order to describe this system in the relevant 0-15 seconds range. The in-situ ellipsometry and electrodeposition analysis reveals a three-step mechanism. After an induction time including the double layer charge, the formation of a monolayer of tellurium is highlighted, followed by the adatom surface diffusion. Then, the growth of three-dimensional Bi2Te3 crystallites is observed according a progressive nucleation and a linear growth rate. Experimental and theoretical details about each technique are given and analyzed. Such gels were subcritically dried, freeze-dried or supercritically dried to obtain organic xerogels, cryogels and aerogels, respectively, having nitrogen contents between 3.0 and 3.7 wt.%. After pyrolysis at 900 °C, the materials presented nitrogen contents ranging from 1.9 to 3.0 wt.%, and surface areas as high as 860, 754 and 585 m2 g?1 for carbon aerogels, cryogels and xerogels, respectively. All of them displayed micropores associated with different mesopore volumes, depending on both the drying method and initial dilution of the precursor. When tested as supercapacitor electrodes, these carbon gels presented outstanding specific and normalised capacitances, up to 387.6 F g?1 and 69.5 ?F cm?2, respectively, at a scan rate of 2 mV s?1 in 4 mol L?1 H2SO4 aqueous solution. These performances are higher than those obtained with high apparent surface area-activated carbons, as the measured capacitances are indeed among the highest ever reported. The influence of nitrogen- and oxygen-based moieties was investigated, and optimal N and O contents of 2–3 and 17–18 wt.%, respectively, were observed. In agreement with density functional theory calculations, the collected data show an overall gradual variation in the transport properties from metallic to semiconducting behavior on going from x = 3.4 to 3.8. The results evidence subtle variations in the electronic properties with the Ag content, typified by both positive and negative phonon-drag effects together with thermopower and Hall coefficient of opposite signs. Analysis of the data suggests that these features may be due to peculiarities of the dispersion of the valence bands in the vicinity of the chemical potential. A drastic influence of the Ag content on the thermal transport was evidenced by a pronounced change in the temperature dependence of the specific heat below 10 K. Nonlinearities in the Cp(T3) data are correlated to the concentration of Ag atoms, with an increase in x resulting in a more pronounced departure from a Debye law. The observed behavior mirrors that of ionic conductors, suggesting that AgxMo9Se11 for x ? 3.6 might belong to this class of compounds. The classical analyzer is replaced by a fixed Rochon birefringent beamsplitter which splits the incidence light wave into two perpendicularly polarized waves, one oriented at + 45° and the other one at ? 45° according to the plane of incidence. Both emergent optical signals are analyzed by two identical CCD detectors which are synchronized by an optical encoder fixed on the shaft of the step-by-step motor of the compensator. The final spectrum is the result of the two averaged ? and ? spectra acquired by both detectors. We show that ? and ? spectra are acquired without systematic errors on a spectral range fixed from 400 to 800 nm. The acquisition time can be adjusted down to 25 ms. The setup was validated by monitoring the first steps of bismuth telluride film electrocrystallization. The results exhibit that induced experimental growth parameters, such as film thickness and volumic fraction of deposited material can be extracted with a better trueness. The use of this mixture allows to reach a higher solubility of Bi(III) and Te(IV) precursors compared to pure EOPipTFSI ionic liquid in which Te(IV) salts are not soluble. Moreover, this electrolyte presents an extended cathodic stability, allowing the study of electrochemical processes that occur at high cathodic potential values. A detailed voltammetric study of electrochemical systems was performed for electrolytes containing different [Bi(III)]/[Te(IV)] ratio, allowing the attribution of cathodic signals to electrochemical processes. Experimental conditions leading to the deposition of stoichiometric Bi2Te3 were then determined by varying deposition potential and electrolyte composition, using potentiostatic experiments followed by XRD and SEM-EDX analysis. By varying the concentration of precursors in the electrolyte, mirror-like coatings, adherent and homogeneous, were obtained. Electroplated Bi2Te3 presents n-type conductivity with a Seebeck coefficient equal to ?70 ?V K?1 and an electrical resistivity of 133 ?? m. The microstructure in the melted layer consisted of a three phase mixture: (i) fine ?-Fe grains formed via epitaxial growth from the substrate, (ii) larger ?–grains nucleated from the top surface of the melt and (iii) some needles-like variants issued from the solid state martenitic transformation. Despite this complex multi-phase microstructure, the corrosion performance, tested in a sulfuric acid solution, was significantly enhanced by the HCPEB treatment. The increase in corrosion potential and delayed pitting are essentially attributed to an increase in Cr content, rising from 13.3 wt. % in the bulk to about 14 wt. % at the surface, together with a very limited amount of surface craters. This low density of craters did not give rise to significant deep hardening in the sub-surface but the top surface melted layer hardness was increased by more than 50% because of the triggering of the martensitic transformation. The rotational temperature of N-2(+)(B) is room temperature. It is estimated from the emission band of the first negative system at 391.4 nm, and it is governed by the temperature of N-2(X) in the surrounding air. N-2(X) is ionized by direct electron impact in the outer part of the plasma. N-2(+)(B) is deactivated by collisions with N-2 and O-2. The rotational temperature of OH(A), estimated from the OH band at 306.4 nm, is slightly higher than that of N-2(+)(B). OH(A) is excited by electron impact with H2O during the first 100 ns of the applied voltage pulse. Next, OH(A) is produced by electron impact with OH(X) created by the quenching of OH(A) by N-2 and O-2. H2O diffuses deeper than N-2 into the plasma ring and the rotational temperature of OH(A) is slightly higher than that of N-2(+)(B). The rotational temperature of N-2(C), estimated from the emission of the second positive system at 315.9 nm, is governed by its collisions with helium. The gas temperature of helium at the beginning of the pulse is predicted to be several hundred kelvin higher than room temperature. A particular attention is paid to the effect of the anodic current density (from 10 to 90 A dm-2) and current pulse frequency (from 100 to 900 Hz) on the resulting oxide layer. Micro-discharges are characterized during the process by means of fast video imaging with a time and a space resolution of 8 μs and 0.017 mm2, respectively. Correlations are established between themicro-discharge characteristics (surface density, lifetime and size) and the elaborated oxide layers (morphology, growth rate and surface roughness). The highest coating growth rate measured (2.1 μm min-1) is achieved with the combination of the highest current density (75.7 A dm-2) and the highest current pulse frequency (900 Hz). Within these specific current conditions it is concluded that the detrimental effects of numerous micro-discharges are minimized. The results also show that the surface roughness may be largely affected by the presence of long-lived and large micro-discharges which develop over the processed surface. The strongest micro-discharges (live duration up to 0.3 ms and cross-sectional area up to 1 mm2) are mainly observed with the combination of the highest current density (75.7 A dm-2) and the lowest current pulse frequency (100 Hz). At the macroscopic level, potential and the corresponding charge accumulated on the gold electrode determine the adsorption process of the collagen film on the Au electrode surface. The protein film is stable on the electrode surface at potentials close to the potential of zero charge. The protein film sustains a large negative potential drop (??M|S ? ?0.5 V) whereas it is unstable at a small positive potential drop (??M|S ? 0.1 V) across the film. Positive net charge accumulated on the Au surface causes electrostatic repulsions of collagen molecules bearing a positive net charge. Loosening of water and destabilization of the protein film reflect repulsions between the Au electrode and the collagen molecules. In contrast, at charge densities between ?8 < ?M < ?20 ?C cm?2 electrostatic attractions between the electrode surface and the protein molecule appear. A stable, well hydrated collagen film is formed on the Au surface. Higher negative charges accumulated on the electrode surface lead to swelling on the protein film by water and lead to the desorption of the protein film from the Au surface. In situ spectroelectrochemical studies show that at the molecular level neither the secondary structure nor the orientation of collagen molecules are affected by electrical potentials. Independently of the applied potential and electric fields acting on the film the collagen molecule maintains its native structure. Collagen molecules adsorbed on the Au surface form a heterogeneous film with well-defined structure and unusual stability at the molecular level. The unconstrained lattice misfit in a single-crystal of the MC2 nickel-based superalloy is determined using convergent beam electron diffraction measurements and finite element calculations. The apparent lattice parameters of both constrained phases are obtained in thin foils, using a new multi-pattern approach, which allows for unambiguous determination of all the lattice parameters considering the real symmetry of the strained crystals. Finite element calculations are used to establish relations between the constrained and unconstrained lattice parameters, with the stress relaxation resulting from the thin foil geometry taken into account. High energy allows one to study volumic specimens of a few mm(3) and get successive data within a few seconds or less. The technique is described with different experimental setups (heating devices, detectors for diverse acquisition times) allowing diverse ranges for heating and cooling rates. Three examples are considered to illustrate the results obtained by using high energy X-ray diffraction. The first one corresponds to a simple diffusive phase transformation during an isothermal thermal path for the alpha-beta transformation in a titanium alloy, highlighting the diffusive character considering the cell parameter evolutions of the parent phase. The second one illustrates the precipitation sequences observed during ageing of a beta-metastable phase in a titanium alloy that was not obtained by TEM. The last example illustrates the phase evolutions during ageing of a martensitic steel showing the complexity of cell parameters evolution and some evolutions of the stress state. Fusion 2012 52 013005 (11 pages) Images acquired by cameras installed in tokamaks are difficult to interpret because the three-dimensional structure of the plasma is flattened in a non-trivial way. Nevertheless, taking advantage of the slow variation of the fluctuations along magnetic field lines, the optical transformation may be approximated by a generalized Abel transform, for which we propose an inversion technique based on the wavelet-vaguelette decomposition. After validation of the new method using an academic test case and numerical data obtained with the Tokam 2D code, we present an application to an experimental movie obtained in the tokamak Tore Supra. A comparison with a classical regularization technique for ill-posed inverse problems, the singular value decomposition, allows us to assess the efficiency. The superiority of the wavelet-vaguelette technique is reflected in preserving local features, such as blobs and fronts, in the denoised emissivity map. Transformation processes have been studied using continuous high energy X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and electrical resistivity for two different states of the beta-metastable phase. Microstructures have been observed by electron microscopy. Different transformation sequences are highlighted depending on both heating rate and chemical composition of the beta-metastable phase. At low temperatures and low heating rates, the hexagonal omega(iso) phase is first formed as generally mentioned in the literature. Increasing the temperature, XRD evidences the formation of an orthorhombic phase (alpha"), which evolves toward the hexagonal pseudo compact alpha phase. For higher heating rates or for richer composition in beta-stabilizing elements of the beta-metastable phase, omega phase may not form and alpha" forms directly and again transforms into alpha phase. A direct transformation from beta-metastable to alpha phase is observed for the highest heating rate. The formation of the metastable omega(iso) and alpha" phases clearly influences the final morphology of alpha. The phase transformation has first been studied experimentally by combining X-ray diffraction analysis, electrical resistivity and microscopy observations. From a series of isothermal treatments. a IT diauram has been determined, which takes into account the different morphologies. Then, a Johnson-Mehl-Avrami-Kolmogorov (JMAK) model has been successfully used to describe the phase transformation kinetics during either isothermal or cooling treatments. Finally, the coupling of the JMAK model to the finite element software ZeBuLoN allowed us to investigate the evolution of the spatial distribution of the different morphologies during the cooling of an aircraft engine shaft disk after forging.
