Performances and mechanistic investigations of a triphosphine trioxide/ionic liquid system for rare earth extraction

The extn. of rare earth elements (REEs) from nitric acid soln. with a triphosphine trioxide (TPO) is presented. Performances of such a ligand in ionic liqs. vs. a classical solvent (benzyl ether) are compared. TPO seems to be 10 to 100 times more efficient when it is dissolved in ionic media whatever the concn. of nitric acid involved. Mechanistic investigations reveal that cation exchange classically obsd. in ionic liqs. is not consistent with the exptl. data. Moreover, clear differences in the TPO/Ln complexes between classical and ionic media are highlighted. A stable complex of 1 lanthanide for 3 TPO is formed in an ionic liq. whereas a complex of 1 lanthanide for 6 to 9 TPO is formed in benzyl ether. Back extn. is also studied and good recovery of REEs could be obtained. The TPO/ionic liq. system shows remarkable performances i.e. efficiency and selectivity towards lanthanides in a simulated leaching soln. of a Nd/Fe/B/Dy magnet. [on SciFinder(R)]

Tuning the morphology of Te one-dimensional nanostructures by template-free electrochemical deposition in an ionic liquid

Abstract Template-free electrodeposition of Te one-dimensional (1 D) nanostructures was carried out from an ionic liquid binary mixture: 1-ethyl-1-octyl-piperidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide:1-ethyl-1-octyl-piperidinium bromide (EOPipTFSI:EOPipBr 95:5 (mol%)). SAED and XRD analyses confirm the formation of Te 1D nanostructures with a hexagonal single crystalline structure following the [001] direction. A systematic study of the influence of synthesis parameters on the deposits morphology has shown that it is possible to control the shape and the dimensions of the deposited nanostructures. Specifically, the applied potential has a strong influence on the morphology of the deposits. Nanowires or hollow nanostructures can be obtained, depending on mass transport conditions, as confirmed by the use of a soluble anode.

Enhancement of Anatase Functionalization and Photocatalytic Self-cleaning Properties of Keratins by Microwave-generated Plasma Afterglow

A microwave-generated plasma afterglow (MWGPA) treatment was applied to keratin fibers to improve their adhesion to anatase nanocrystals by modifying their surface chemical and physical structure. The induced photocatalytic self-cleaning property has significantly been improved by 70% as evidenced by complete stain decomposition in 6 h only. The effects of gas mixtures, gas flow, treatment distance, treatment duration and power flow of the MWGPA treatment on keratin's surface were investigated. The MWGPA-induced alteration of keratin's surface structure resulted in an increase in the uptake of anatase crystals and thus enhanced photocatalytic self-cleaning activities. The contact angle, absorption time, deposition behavior, adhesion and stability of anatase coating of keratin fibers are discussed. The anatase uptake and coating uniformity were characterized quantitatively using Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry. This efficient and low energy plasma surface activation approach demonstrated potential toward the practical application of anatase in keratinous materials.

ESTELL: a quasi-Toroidally Symmetric Stellarator

This work presents the physics design for a simple quasi-axially symmetric stellarator. A plasma configuration described by a modest number of Fourier coefficients was found to establish this symmetry with good accuracy. The low rotational transform results in a relatively simple coil set exhibiting low curvatures and comfortable clearance between adjacent coils. As another consequence, the maximum achievable plasma pressure will be limited to about 0.5%. The effect of a dust size distribution on electrostatic sheaths in unmagnetized dusty plasmas

In this work, the structure of plasma sheaths in presence of dust particles with different sizes is investigated numerically in a multifluid framework, where the dust size distribution is modeled by Gauss' law. For this, we have established a 1D, stationary, unmagnetized, and weakly collisional electronegative dusty plasma sheath model. The electrons and negative ions are considered in a local thermodynamic equilibrium, therefore, described by a Boltzmann distribution. On the other hand, positive ions and dust grains are described by fluid equations. The charging process is described by the orbit motion limited model. It is shown that taking into account dust grains with different sizes reduces considerably the sheath thickness. The behavior of dust surface potential is not affected, but the dust charge number is reduced, as well as the electrostatic force. It results in a decrease of layered structure. The presence of negative ions makes the structure of the electrostatic potential more oscillatory. The other physical parameters are also analyzed and discussed. Determination of gamma-gamma' lattice misfit in a single-crystal nickel-based superalloy using convergent beam electron diffraction aided by finite element calculations

In single-crystal nickel-based superalloys, the lattice mismatch associated with interface coherency between gamma matrix and gamma' precipitates has a strong influence on mechanical properties. The unconstrained lattice misfit in a single-crystal of the MC2 nickel-based superalloy is determined using convergent beam electron diffraction measurements and finite element calculations. The apparent lattice parameters of both constrained phases are obtained in thin foils, using a new multi-pattern approach, which allows for unambiguous determination of all the lattice parameters considering the real symmetry of the strained crystals. Finite element calculations are used to establish relations between the constrained and unconstrained lattice parameters, with the stress relaxation resulting from the thin foil geometry taken into account. Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) allows the deposition of thin films onto flat as well as complex geometry surfaces with excellent conformality. Thicknesses of few atomic layers can be achieved. Moreover, low-temperature deposition is possible and this enables the change of surface properties of many kinds of materials. Good adhesion characteristics and also good mechanical performance of ALD deposited thin films make the technique extremely interesting for several applications, as for example micro-electronics. TiO2 is a well studied semiconductor material because of its multifunctional properties that open a wide range of applications for example in photocatalysis, optics and solar cells. ALD is extremely completive to other technique, to deposit titania thin films, employed even to improve the biocompatibility of many kind of materials. TiO2 thin films are deposited with ALD technique at low temperature (90 degrees C) onto Kapton substrate and then crystallized ex-situ after annealing at 300 degrees C. X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques are very suitable for the analysis of structure and microstructure of films and surface layers. In this work, XRD in combination with in situ tensile testing has been applied for the first time to measure elastic properties (elastic modulus and Poisson ratio) of TiO2 anatase thin films obtained by ALD. For the experimental conditions, the tensile stage was installed in a Synchrotron laboratory of Soleil. The information extracted from diffraction patterns is presented. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. We have adapted the Quickhull algorithm with the general dimension Beneath-Beyond algorithm <prt>[</prt>6] for computing the convex hull of the Gibbs energy hypersurface of multicomponent two-phase alloys. We illustrate the salient features of our method with calculations of isothermal ferrite-austenite equilibria in Fe-C-Cr. Finally, successive equilibrium calculations in a Fe-C-Cr-Mo steel over a large temperature range show the benefit of computing the convex hull before performing the conventional Newton-Raphson search.

The post-discharge of a microwave resonant cavity working at atmospheric pressure is used to enhance deposition of SiOx thin films from HMDSO by chemical vapor deposition. Maximum static deposition rates are close to 150 mu m h(-1) for low power consumption per unit of coated width (similar to 100 W/cm). Dynamic deposition rates are close to 3.5 nm ms(-1). The distribution of the coating thickness is heterogeneous over an area of 150 x 90 mm(2). The influence of the main parameters of the process is systematically studied to show how the key reactions, i.e. gas phase synthesis of powders and surface deposition, are correlated. Amorphous TiO2 thin films were deposited by means of atomic layer deposition on Kapton substrates and then crystallized ex situ by annealing at 300 degrees C to obtain the anatase phase. The morphology, structure and microstructure of films treated for 12, 24, 72 and 90 h were investigated. The local Ti coordination changes were studied by X-ray near-edge structure (XANES). On the basis of X-ray diffraction residual stress calculations, the elastic anisotropy of the films is experimentally determined for the first time (A<prt>*</prt>(comp) = 0.07, A<prt>*</prt>(shear) = 0.03). The film macro-strains increased with the time of treatment, while the micro-strains decreased. This effect may be correlated with the incipient anatase-to-rutile transformation as suggested by the changes observed in the XANES pattern of the film treated for 90 h. We propose a description of incoherent and semi-coherent interfaces within the framework of diffuse interface modelling: accounting for the discontinuity of tangential displacements is an issue addressed by introducing a new field, called the incoherency field, located in the diffuse interface and able to release the shear stresses tangential to the interface. After having demonstrated the ability of the model to recover trends obtained by sharp interface models of sliding interfaces, the process of loss of coherency is investigated by assuming a local process which would result from the competition between the shear stress release at the interface and the interfacial energy increase.

The beta(BCC) -> alpha(HCP) + beta(BCC) phase transformation kinetics of the beta-metastable titanium alloy Ti17 was studied by in situ high energy X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electrical resistivity. The use of synchrotron radiation (E = 89.12 keV, lambda = 0.01402 nm) allowed to characterize specimens 6 mm in diameter, limiting thus oxidation effects. The alpha + beta -> beta phase transformation kinetics was characterized during continuous heating up to the P temperature range. The beta -> alpha + beta transformation was studied in isothermal conditions (dwell at 708 degrees C or 750 degrees C) and during continuous cooling (cooling rates of 0.05 degrees C/s, 0.1 degrees C/s and 0.61 degrees C/s). The evolutions of the phase fractions are analyzed and compared to kinetics measured by electrical resistivity, showing a good correlation between both methods. In addition, the evolutions of the cell parameters of each phase obtained from XRD patterns are analyzed in regard of the transformation kinetics. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A complete modeling of the phase transformation during the cooling following the forging has been carried out for near-beta titanium alloys. To that aim, we have improved a model predicting the influence of the deformation of the beta phase on the alpha phase precipitation during isothermal treatments, by extending its range of application to the case of cooling treatments. In particular, the precipitation of the intragranular morphology alpha(WI) has been introduced. We have proceeded step by step: calculations of heat treatments without any previous forging have first been performed. Then, the influence of the initial beta grain size have been studied. Finally, the influence of a previous deformation coming from the forging has been investigated. The prediction of microstructure during processing needs to characterize the phase transformation occurring during the thermal treatments and their kinetics. In-situ high-energy synchrotron x-ray diffraction experiments performed during temperature variations allow the characterization of the phase evolution. For some transformation conditions, the continuous recording of diffraction diagrams evidences clearly intermediate phases. The quantitative analysis of the diffraction diagrams gives the transformation kinetics of each phase as well as their cell parameters. Transformation kinetics obtained by this method are compared to results obtained by electrical resistivity.

We have investigated the microstructure evolutions in the Ti17 near beta titanium alloy during heat treatments. The phase transformation has first been studied experimentally by combining X-ray diffraction analysis, electrical resistivity and microscopy observations. From a series of isothermal treatments. a IT diauram has been determined, which takes into account the different morphologies. Then, a Johnson-Mehl-Avrami-Kolmogorov (JMAK) model has been successfully used to describe the phase transformation kinetics during either isothermal or cooling treatments. Finally, the coupling of the JMAK model to the finite element software ZeBuLoN allowed us to investigate the evolution of the spatial distribution of the different morphologies during the cooling of an aircraft engine shaft disk after forging.
