A convex hull algorithm for minimization of Gibbs energy in two-phase multicomponent alloys
Solid State Phenomena
2011

Part 1
1214-1219
We have adapted the Quickhull algorithm with the general dimension Beneath-Beyond algorithm <prt>[</prt>6] for computing the convex hull of the Gibbs energy hypersurface of multicomponent two-phase alloys. We illustrate the salient features of our method with calculations of isothermal ferrite-austenite equilibria in Fe-C-Cr. Finally, successive equilibrium calculations in a Fe-C-Cr-Mo steel over a large temperature range show the benefit of computing the convex hull before performing the conventional Newton-Raphson search.

A study of dual phase steel damage evolution with microstructure
Solid State Phenomena
2011
172-174
Part 1
839-844
A detailed analysis of the evolution of industrial Dual Phase (DP) steel microstructures is carried out as a function of various annealing and tempering conditions. Advanced characterization techniques such as Parallel Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (PEELS) in the TEM and high spatial resolution Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (NanoSIMS) are employed in order to provide qualitative and quantitative measurements of local carbon concentration in the martensite. For certain annealing and tempering conditions, it is observed that local variations in carbon levels have occurred inside the individual martensite islands. These carbon variations strongly influence the damage behaviour of the steel. During tensile tests, a clear dependence of the damage mode on the local martensite carbon content is observed. Better knowledge of the relationship between the microstructure evolution at the sub-grain level and the damage behaviour can facilitate the design of DP steels with improved damage resistance.

Characterization of Precipitation Sequences in Superaustenitic Stainless Steels
Solid State Phenomena
2011
172-174
Part 1
493-498
Superaustenitic stainless steels exhibit excellent corrosion resistance, at a wide variety of exposure temperatures, especially in chloride containing environments, coupled with desirable mechanical properties. Previous studies have shown that these steels are prone to precipitation of secondary phases, such as sigma phase (sigma), chi phase (chi). Laves-phase, carbides, nitrides or secondary austenite, when exposed at elevated temperatures, directly affecting their mechanical properties and corrosion behaviour. A detailed study of the effect of isothermal ageing on the microstructure of S32654 (Fe-24Cr-21Ni-7Mo-0.5N-0.013C) and S31254 (Fe-20Cr-18Ni-6Mo-0.2N-0.012C) superaustenitic stainless steels was carried out. Samples were aged within the temperature range of 650 degrees C to 950 degrees C for times up to 3000 h. Following ageing, precipitation of secondary phases was clearly observed with precipitates varying in volume fraction, size, shape and spatial distribution. Several secondary phases were identified via transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron diffraction (ED). The orientation relationships between the austenitic matrix and the secondary phases were identified. Interaction and also phase transformation among different types of precipitates, such as between precipitates and the austenitic matrix were observed and an attempt of understanding these phase transformations was carried out.

This paper describes several specific aspects of atmospheric plasma deposition carried out with a microwave resonant cavity. Deposition over a wide substrate is first studied. We show that high deposition rates (several hundreds of mu m h(-1)) are due to localization of fluxes on the substrate by convection when slightly turbulent flows are used. Next, we describe possible routes to localize deposition over a nanometre-sized area. Scaling down atmospheric plasma deposition is possible and two strategies to reach nanometre scales are described. Finally, we study self-organization of SiO(2) nanodots deposited by chemical vapour deposition at atmospheric pressure enhanced by an Ar-O(2) micro-afterglow operating at high temperature (>1200 K). When the film being deposited is thin enough (similar to 500 nm) nanodots are obtained and they can be assembled into threads to create patterned surfaces. When the coating becomes thicker (similar to 1 mu m), and for relatively high content in HMDSO, SiO(2) walls forming hexagonal cells are obtained.

The post-discharge of a microwave resonant cavity working at atmospheric pressure is used to enhance deposition of SiOx thin films from HMDSO by chemical vapor deposition. Maximum static deposition rates are close to 150 mu m h(-1) for low power consumption per unit of coated width (similar to 100 W/cm). Dynamic deposition rates are close to 3.5 nm ms(-1). The distribution of the coating thickness is heterogeneous over an area of 150 x 90 mm(2). The influence of the main parameters of the process is systematically studied to show how the key reactions, i.e. gas phase synthesis of powders and surface deposition, are correlated. In situ synchrotron analysis of lattice rotations in individual grains during stress-induced martensitic transformations in a polycrystalline CuAlBe shape memory alloy
Acta Materialia

3636-3645
Two synchrotron diffraction techniques, three-dimensional X-ray diffraction and Laue microdiffraction, are applied to studying the deformation behaviour of individual grains embedded in a Cu(74)Al(23)Be(3) superelastic shape memory alloy. The average lattice rotation and the intragranular heterogeneity of orientations are measured during in situ tensile tests at room temperature for four grains of mean size similar to 1 mm. During mechanical loading, all four grains rotate and the mean rotation angle increases with austenite deformation. As the martensitic transformation occurs, the rotation becomes more pronounced, and the grain orientation splits into several sub-domains: the austenite orientation varies on both sides of the martensite variant. The mean disorientation is similar to 1 degrees. Upon unloading, the sub-domains collapse and reverse rotation is observed. (C) 2011 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Microstructure - Properties Relationships in Carbide-free Bainitic Steels
ISIJ International
2011

10
1724-1732
We elaborated two carbide-free bainitic steels with different microstructures through specific alloy design and austempering process. Microstructural characterizations were performed by means of EBSD analysis and in-situ high energy synchrotron diffraction in order to evaluate the phase fractions and the carbon content in the retained austenite, as well as the microtextures. These microstructural features were correlated to the tensile properties. Both steels exhibited an excellent compromise between high strength (above 1 250 MPa), good ductility (uniform elongation up to 14%) and high fracture strain (reduction of area up to 46%). The volume fraction of MA blocks (blocks of retained austenite partially transformed into fresh martensite during the final cooling at room temperature) was a key relevant parameter that strongly influenced the work-hardening at the expense of the damaging processes at high strain.

Microstructure and elastic properties of atomic layer deposited TiO2 anatase thin films
Acta Materialia
2011

2891-2900
Amorphous TiO2 thin films were deposited by means of atomic layer deposition on Kapton substrates and then crystallized ex situ by annealing at 300 degrees C to obtain the anatase phase. The morphology, structure and microstructure of films treated for 12, 24, 72 and 90 h were investigated. The local Ti coordination changes were studied by X-ray near-edge structure (XANES). On the basis of X-ray diffraction residual stress calculations, the elastic anisotropy of the films is experimentally determined for the first time (A<prt>*</prt>(comp) = 0.07, A<prt>*</prt>(shear) = 0.03). The film macro-strains increased with the time of treatment, while the micro-strains decreased. This effect may be correlated with the incipient anatase-to-rutile transformation as suggested by the changes observed in the XANES pattern of the film treated for 90 h. However, the contribution of the substrate cannot be excluded. (C) 2011 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The origin of organization of nanostructured silica coatings deposited on stainless steel substrates by remote microplasma at atmospheric pressure is investigated. We show by resorting to thermal camera measurements coupled with modelling that deposition, limited to a few seconds in time, occurs at low temperature (similar to below 420 K) although the gas temperature may reach 1400 K. Raman analyses of deposited films with thicknesses below 1 mu m show the presence of oxidized silicon bonded to the metallic surface. The origin of nanodots is explained as follows. Close to the microplasma nozzle, the concentration of oxidizing species and/or the temperature being high enough, a silica thin film is obtained, leading to ceramic-metallic oxide interface that leads to a Volmer-Weber growth mode and to the synthesis of 3D structures over long treatment times. Far from the nozzle, the reactivity decreasing, thin films get a plasma-polymer like behaviour which leads to a Franck-Van der Merwe growth mode and films with a higher density. Other nanostructures, made of hexagonal cells, are observed but remain unexplained.

Phase transformations in the Al-Si coating during the austenitization step
Solid State Phenomena

Part 1

Nowadays more and more hot stamped steel sheets dedicated for the automotive body-in-white structure are pre-coated to prevent the steel surface against iron oxidation and decarburization during the austenitization step. For these applications, the coating is deposited by continuous hot-dipping the steel in an Al-Si bath. The Al-Si coating, at the delivery state, contains Al-grains, Al-Fe-Si ternary phases, Al-Fe binary phases. During the austenitization, the Al-Si coating transforms completely by inter-diffusion and solidification reactions. The mechanisms of Al-Fe-Si phase transformations at high temperature are almost unknown. The phase transformations occurring during austenitization define the final coating microstructure responsible for the in use properties of the product like spot welding, painting adherence or corrosion behavior. It is the aim of this paper to propose a new way of understanding the mechanisms of phase transformation in the Al-Si coating during the austenitization step (between 900 and 930 degrees C) before the transfer into the hot-stamping press.

Precipitation in a near beta titanium alloy on ageing: Influence of heating rate and chemical composition of the beta-metastable phase
Solid State Phenomena

Part 1
760-765
In the present study we focus on the precipitation processes during heating and ageing of beta-metastable phase in the near beta Ti-5553 alloy. Transformation processes have been studied using continuous high energy X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and electrical resistivity for two different states of the beta-metastable phase. Microstructures have been observed by electron microscopy. Different transformation sequences are highlighted depending on both heating rate and chemical composition of the beta-metastable phase. At low temperatures and low heating rates, the hexagonal omega(iso) phase is first formed as generally mentioned in the literature. Increasing the temperature, XRD evidences the formation of an orthorhombic phase (alpha"), which evolves toward the hexagonal pseudo compact alpha phase. For higher heating rates or for richer composition in beta-stabilizing elements of the beta-metastable phase, omega phase may not form and alpha" forms directly and again transforms into alpha phase. A direct transformation from beta-metastable to alpha phase is observed for the highest heating rate. The formation of the metastable omega(iso) and alpha" phases clearly influences the final morphology of alpha.

TEM Study of High-Temperature Precipitation of Delta Phase in Inconel 718 Alloy
Advances in Materials Science and Engineering

Inconel 718 is widely used because of its ability to retain strength at up to 650 degrees C for long periods of time through coherent metastable gamma `' Ni(3)Nb precipitation associated with a smaller volume fraction of gamma' Ni(3)Al precipitates. At very long ageing times at service temperature, gamma `' decomposes to the stable Ni(3)Nb delta phase. This latter phase is also present above the gamma `' solvus and is used for grain control during forging of alloy 718. While most works available on delta precipitation have been performed at temperatures below the gamma `' solvus, it appeared of interest to also investigate the case where delta phase precipitates directly fromthe fccmatrix free of gamma `' precipitates. This was studied by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). TEM observations confirmed the presence of rotation-ordered domains in delta plates, and some unexpected contrast could be explained by double diffraction due to overlapping phases.

Synchrotron x-ray radiation was used for in situ strain measurements in gold films on polyimide substrate during uniaxial deformation tests. We have used an area detector that allows inspecting multiple directions in the polycrystalline thin film without serial sectioning during straining. We show in this paper the configuration used and the attainable orientations on a pole figure for which the x-ray strains are measured. Moreover, we show the effect on the x-ray strains of the onset on plasticity, which was not detected by optical (macroscopic) strain measurement. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
