NOUS (New ultrathin supported oxides)

Abstract

Ultrathin oxide films supported on metallic surfaces represent promising materials in view of both fundamental science and technological applications.

The objective of this project is to study the synthesis and properties of a new class of ultrathin oxide films with complex structures obtained by reduction of metal / oxide interfaces under ultrahigh vacuum.

These 2D oxides can adopt structures that do not exist in volume, such as honeycomb structures, giant mesh structures, and even quasicrystalline structures.

Bringing together 3 IJL's research group with complementary expertise and a competence center, this project aims at understanding the interfacial interactions favoring the emergence of these new 2D phases and to characterize their structural, electronic, chemical and wetting properties in connection with their low-dimensional character for potential applications.
