VERGLAS (Development of a protective system against plasma icing of aircraft)

Abstract

Icing is a natural phenomenon that impacts many sectors of activity such as transport (land, air and sea) but also energy (distribution and production).

In the aviation sector, there are protection systems against icing (IPS for Icing Protection System) but their deployment remains limited to a few aircraft due to energy consumption and/or excessive bulk.

The objective of the project is to develop a new thermal protection system against icing based on a Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) type plasma actuator.

Two approaches are considered to improve this conversion:

  • development of new materials making up the dielectric
  • development of new actuator configurations (production method and electrode geometry)
